I’ve been re-watching Anne of Green Gables. If you have seen it, you’ll remember Rachel Lind. She is known across the island for ‘speaking her mind’ and you simply musn’t mind it. To the face of anyone in the area, including little orphan Anne she uses honesty as an excuse to say terrible things. Apparently the little phrase ‘if you haven’t anything nice to say, don’t say anything’ simply didn’t apply to someone like Rachel Lind who simply must speak her mind. When clashing with Anne’s horrible temper, Rachel Lind is met with someone who poetically meets her honesty with truth. It reminds me of some of our politicians right now.
Donald Trump is a storm of arrogance, ignorance, and downright hatefulness that is somehow being defending by a call to ‘honesty.’ Honesty is great; it really is. I’ve been seeing this George Carlin meme circulating lately especially with those who support Trump. That, a disastrous conversation with someone who considers themselves honest to a fault, and watching an ‘honest couple’ be downright nasty has hammered something home to me. Honesty is being used as some sort of an excuse to be a total asshole. I guess it shows what kind of person you really are. It seems to me that the way in which you are honest, speaks volumes about the kind of person the speaker is, not so much the people about whom they are speaking. Truth and honesty are two different things and manners are officially out of style these days. I am extremely skeptical of people who try to defend hatred and rudeness as a virtue by renaming it. That is not what makes a man, a man. That is not what makes a human, a human to me. Boldness is important. Honesty is important. If you’re going to be honest and bold be honest and bold about where you are. Be honest and bold about how you feel. You don’t have to tear someone down to build yourself up.
On a slightly different note, music and I made up…for the most part. I made it through that Calvin Harris and Rhianna song. As a result, I heard the Megyn Kelly and Heidi Cruz’s Donald Trump theme song. I can hear them screaming:
“When a female fires back
Suddenly big talker don’t know how to act
So he does what any little boy would do
Making up a few false rumors or two
That for sure is not a man to me
Slandering names for popularity
It’s sad you wanna get your fame through controversy
But now it’s time for me to come and give you more to say.”
